As gas prices rise, rely on smart routines
-- and common sense car care -- everyday!
- Make errand-running easy. Plan out your trip to the grocery store, drugstore, etc. with a detailed list and any coupons you'll be using. Then make the best use of your time on the road -- if the dry cleaner is on the way to the library, make drop-offs at both places on the same day instead of taking two separate trips.
- Make use of gas coupons -- and be careful with credit. If you've got a credit card for a certain brand of gas, you may enjoy the perks of special promotions. But be sure to pay off the full balance every month to make it worthwhile. If you carry a balance, it's best to go with a general credit card (with a lower interest rate) instead.
- Care for your car. The best way to make the most miles per gallon is to keep your speeds down, limit quick and sudden accelarations, and be sure your tires are properly inflated. If you're in the market for a new car, pay attention to gas mileage. Though the haggled price may seem like a great deal, the cost of gas and other maintenance adds to the overall cost of owning the car.
- Consider alternatives to driving such as carpooling, biking, or even foregoing a trip by car. Instead of making long trips across town, see what entertainment is available in your own town, suburb or city area. You may find the shorter commute is just one of the rewards of staying closer to home!
